The Swan City is Growing!
Grande Prairie has cracked the 55,000 population mark.
Statistics Canada released its 2011 Federal census figures Tuesday and the City’s population reached 55,032, a 16.8 per cent increase over 2006. In that Canada-wide census, Grande Prairie had a population of 47,107.
The City now ranks at 59th in size in Canada. Grande Prairie’s rise in population placed it in the top seven in the country in population growth.
In fact, between 2006 and 2011, 10 of 15 census agglomerations with the highest population growth were in Alberta.
“This shows that Grande Prairie continued to grow, even during a slower economy,” says Mayor Bill Given. “This steady growth trend shows that investments in infrastructure like schools and the new regional health & education centre, will continue to be important – particularly now that economic activity is once again picking up.”
Grande Prairie’s municipal census in 2007 registered 50,227 residents.
On May 10, 2011, 33,476,688 Canadians were counted in the census. This is almost twice as many as in 1961 and about 10 times as many as in the 1861 census.
